KT200PLUS ECU File Naming Guide: Organize Flash, EEPROM and Backup Data
Professional ECU and TCU programming can create several different files during one job. A technician may save identification data, original Flash, EEPROM or MCU reads, Virtual Read files, working copies and final Write files.
Without a clear naming system, it is easy to confuse a stock reference with a physical backup or load the wrong file into a programming operation. This guide explains a practical KT200PLUS ECU file management system for workshops handling reading, writing, cloning and recovery.
Why KT200PLUS File Management Matters
File size and filename alone do not prove compatibility. Two files can have the same size while belonging to different ECU hardware, software versions, memory areas or vehicle applications.
A structured archive keeps the file source, controller information, protocol and operation connected. It also helps technical support understand a programming problem more quickly.
Recommended KT200PLUS File Categories
| File Category | Meaning | Recommended Handling |
|---|---|---|
| ECU-ID or TCU-ID | Identification information returned by the selected protocol | Keep with controller photos and software screenshots. |
| Original Flash | Flash data physically read from the connected ECU or TCU when supported | Keep unchanged as a master backup. |
| Original EEPROM | EEPROM data physically read when the protocol provides access | Store separately and never overwrite. |
| Original MCU | Microcontroller or processor data when supported | Record the exact memory operation and file size. |
| Virtual Read | Matching software obtained through an identification-based workflow | Do not automatically label it as a complete physical backup. |
| Working File | A separate copy prepared for authorized editing or repair | Keep it away from the untouched original master. |
| Final Write | The exact file selected for programming | Archive it with the protocol, date and verification result. |
Use a Consistent Filename Structure
A useful filename should identify the vehicle, ECU or TCU, hardware or software reference, memory area, source and status.
Recommended structure
[Brand]_[Model]_[Year]_[ECU-or-TCU]_[HW-or-SW]_[Memory]_[Source]_[Status]_[Date]

Keep Original, Working and Final Files Separate
The first verified original file should become the master reference. Do not edit or overwrite the only original copy.
- Save the first successful read as an untouched original master.
- Create a separate working copy for authorized calibration, repair or cloning preparation.
- Use a new version number for each change.
- Save the exact final Write file in a separate folder.
- Record which file was actually selected in KT200PLUS.
| Folder | Recommended Contents |
|---|---|
| 01_Vehicle_Information | Vehicle model, year, engine, transmission and customer job details |
| 02_ECU_TCU_Identification | Controller label photos, ECU-ID or TCU-ID screenshots and protocol information |
| 03_Original_Master | Original Flash, EEPROM, MCU and supported full-backup files |
| 04_Virtual_Read | Matching stock files obtained through a Virtual Read workflow |
| 05_Working_Files | Authorized edited files such as V1, V2 and comparison copies |
| 06_Final_Write | The exact file programmed by KT200PLUS |
| 07_Reports | Voltage readings, screenshots, error messages and final verification results |
Virtual Read Is Not Automatically a Full Physical Backup
For selected protocols, KT200PLUS may provide a Virtual Read file based on ECU or TCU identification. This can be useful as a matching stock reference or for a supported writing operation.
However, a Virtual Read should not automatically be renamed as a complete physical backup. It may not contain current physical EEPROM, MCU data, adaptations, previous modifications or every memory area in the controller.
When a file comes from Virtual Read, include VIRTUAL in the filename and store it separately. For a detailed comparison, review the KT200PLUS Virtual Read vs Physical Read Guide.
Record the KT200PLUS Protocol With Every File
Every file should remain connected to the protocol that created it. Record the controller family, processor, connection mode and memory operation in the job folder.
Use the official KT200PLUS Supported Vehicles database to confirm the exact controller and available operation. Then review the KT200PLUS Features page to understand the supported professional workflow.
| Protocol Record | Example |
|---|---|
| Controller family | Bosch EDC17, Delphi DCM, Marelli, Denso, Continental or another confirmed family |
| Processor | Infineon, MPC, SPC, Renesas or another processor listed by the protocol |
| Connection mode | OBD, Bench, Boot or JTAG |
| Memory operation | Flash, EEPROM, MCU or protocol-specific full backup |
| Read type | Physical Read or Virtual Read |
File Verification Before Writing
Before writing a working or modified file, compare it with the actual controller. Check the vehicle application, ECU or TCU hardware number, software number, processor, memory area, file size and file source.
Do not select a file only because its name contains the same ECU family. The KT200PLUS ECU File Matching Guide explains why hardware and software information must be checked together.
If checksum handling is relevant, confirm whether it is managed by the protocol, file software or a professional file service before starting the Write operation.
Organize ECU and TCU Clone Files
Cloning requires more than matching a vehicle model. When both original and donor controllers are available, keep their data in separate folders.
| Controller | Suggested Folder | Recommended Files |
|---|---|---|
| Original ECU or TCU | Original_Controller | Identification, Flash, EEPROM, MCU and original reports |
| Donor ECU or TCU | Donor_Controller | Identification, original reads and hardware photographs |
| Clone preparation | Clone_Working | Comparison copies and authorized working files |
| Final result | Clone_Final_Write | Exact files written to the donor controller and verification screenshots |
Download the Correct KT200PLUS Software
Use the official KT200PLUS Software Download page to obtain the installer and dongle driver. Record the software version inside every job folder because software updates may change available protocols, file operations or displayed instructions.
Recommended Archive and Backup Procedure
- Complete the vehicle and controller identification record.
- Save all available original data before writing.
- Keep original master files unchanged.
- Store working and modified files in separate folders.
- Record the exact file source and memory operation.
- Save the final written file and post-write verification report.
- Create secure backup copies of the completed job folder.
Contact KT200PLUS Support With Complete File Details
If a programming job requires assistance, send the vehicle details, ECU or TCU label, selected protocol, software version, file names, file source and exact error message.
Explain whether the file is a Physical Read, Virtual Read, original master, donor file, working copy or final Write file. This is more useful than sending only a filename.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should Flash and EEPROM files use different names?
Yes. Include the memory area in the filename so technicians can immediately distinguish Flash, EEPROM, MCU and other controller data.
Can I name a Virtual Read file as a full backup?
It is better to keep Virtual Read and Physical Read clearly separate. A Virtual Read may provide matching stock software but is not automatically a complete physical backup.
Why should the protocol be included in the filename?
The same controller family may have different connection methods and memory operations. The protocol record explains how the file was created and what it contains.
How should donor ECU files be stored?
Keep donor identification and donor original reads in a separate folder from the original vehicle controller. Store comparison and final clone files separately.
